I first tried my hand at music composition during my mid 'teens', just a few small pieces, but once I started work I more or less gave up. The odd attempts later on, whilst improvising at the piano, to then write down an interesting melody or chanced upon chord progression were always disappointing. Within moments of creating one of these ideas they were gone from my mind and efforts to reconstruct them never sounded the same or lacked the same emotion. Thankfully technology came to the rescue in 1995, with my first Macintosh computer, a Roland Synthesiser and music sequencing software. Linked together with 'midi' cables I could now endlessly record my improvisations, capturing all changes of tempo and dynamics along the way, and tidy them up later or build on them to create unique compositions which I found entertaining and satisfying. My family and friends are gradually hearing my pieces, again helped by technology, as I am progressively producing CD's at home of selected works (click here to find out more). I am hoping for 'happy' compositional inspiration for many more years to come.
